Being A Patriot of The United States Of America
71
Sometimes I wonder what it is to be a true American. If our people remember all the lives that have died for their freedoms, and the sacrifices American families have suffered generation after generation. I never had a chance to serve in the military due to I was a girl, and in my generation I wasn't aloud to serve in combat, since then that has changed allowing women to fight in combat.
People want to fight about politics and religion, a "cultural war", a divided group of people across America debating on certain situations. Under the pledge of allegiance we are one nation under God. On the back of your dollar bill it says, "In God We trust". Anyone that has studied the history of America understands that God was part of the foundation of this country. It wasn't recorded through out time we would be an atheist nation. It is not in atheists we trust! It is not under a divided nation, but one nation!
Its amazing that when 9/11 happen people came together people stood by one another because the loss our country faced. Even Todd Beamer sacrificed his life for you. He didn't think about what side of the debate he was on, or what religion he was. He just knew to act now, before other people died.
Lisa Beamer, who is a committed Christian, writes in her book what she needed and received. Having received official confirmation from United Airlines that her husband had indeed died in the crash of Flight 93, Lisa’s spiritual friends swarmed to her side. “Rev. Bob Cushman, Todd’s and my pastor, was among the first to arrive, along with Dr. Al Hickok, the professional counselor at our church. They came upstairs and prayed with me” (Beamer, Let’s Roll!, p. 168).
A Christian sacrificed his life for yours. How many other Christians have done the same over the generations? How many Christians have been in the oval office over the generations and through out history? I think you have to realise your views may not match Christianity, but to disrespect those that have been Christians that have sacrificed their lives for yours should be appreciated, and honored, as much as the lives of non-believers. Someone paid a price for your freedom. If you can't remember that, than walk along the Vietnam wall in Washington at all the names that have died, and all the families that suffered.
My father was one of them that served in Vietnam. He didn't have a choice, he was drafted. I have sacrificed not having a father most of my life because the emotional affects this war had on him, because people in America didn't support the war. A war that the government put our soldiers their for no reason. I have a great uncle that is missing in action to this day because of the Korean War. I had a grandfather that served in WWII that was shot in the knee crawling across the dirt road scared out of his mind if he would survive that day. I can go on down the line of generations that have fought for this country generations before him in my own family. I just know one thing if there wasn't any God I wouldn't be standing here or even exist. As many generations in my family that were in wars what are the chances of me being here.
I also know that my grandfather taught me to be proud of my country, to stand up for what is right. He served many years with my grandmother serving the disabled veterans, putting flags out on all the military graves in our local cemeteries, worked on having military names placed on monuments and memorials in our area to remember those who died in the service.
I may not agree with my government being a social worker, or humanitarian, and have my own things I don't feel are right, but at the same time I know better than to disrespect the brothers and sisters I have in this country that have sacrificed many things in their own lives for the freedoms of the world and our country. When you dishonor our country, our government officials you are disrespecting everything this country has stood on for as long as its been the United States. Issues do have to be confronted, and yes you have the freedom to fight for your rights. I just don't believe that being a divided nation, being discriminating to others, being prejudice toward other peoples views and opinions are to constructive in making this a better country.
There is no reason why people can't choose more positive methods to make this a better country than bickering and arguing in forums on the Internet. Its not action, its just opinions and thoughts. There are many efforts and causes you can join to really make a better world and difference. My grandfather did this in his own community. How many veterans hospitals are there out there or vets that make a difference every day. How many other causes and organizations are lobbying and going up to bat for others rights and your rights.
What are you doing in your local government or community agencies and organizations to help other people out in America? Do something for the good of the people under one nation not a divided one! I often wonder if only military families truly understand what it is like to be a true American and patriot. I hear military families talking about all the sacrifices and hardships they have lived due to their men serving. I hope this is not the reality, but when I hear people bickering over religion and politics cut throating each other, its not what its about. Its about coming together working together to make a better country the same way people came together in 9/11, but of course the only time we feel the need to do that is when a tragedy strikes. You have options to write your senators, congressmen, and get involved in political campaigns. You have the choice to voice your opinions through different methods and lobbying. So make a difference and act, instead of just bickering and arguing!

I admire your passion, but I have some questions:
You do realise that millions of atheists have fought, sacrificed and died in the same wars you proclaim as the (exclusive)Holy Ground of Christians, don't you?
That the God you call upon to hold your nation as one, is the same God called upon by equally brave men and women who just happened to be on the other side, (eg Germany, Italy) when the politicians of the time (whose 'noble calling' you demand us to respect and admire today), decided it was time to start WW2?
That the reason the dollar bill says "In God we trust" is because there's no gold reserve backing US currency anymore; it's all debt. So if (when) it all tumbles down, the only place to look for recourse will be God?
That religion, coupled with unbridled patriotism / nationalism (the mother of colonialism), is the root cause of most of the world's conflicts?
As Scosgrove so aptly puts it above: Just food for thought :)
I agree hattie. I my self am a proud american as well as come from a long line of military personel. My grandfather served both in air force and army. He was in wwII. Many sacrifices he has done. My nan (Rest her soul)was a silent soldier. My grandpa was gone alot and she raised her family on her own never once complaining. Shoulders back and head up, and they were married for 60 years. My father a vet himself Korean war. My uncle has been sent everywhere including desert storm and was wounded.I know I have a few others. i myself, use to help put flags on the graves of veterans every veteran day and menmorial day, until I got a job and it interferred. Now i am a Senior Vice president of the ladies Auxilary for Veterans of Foreign wars post 2811. I do help my vets when i can and i teach my children pride in our country, because without our military sisters and brothers who sacrifice every day we would not be here.So From one patriotic home front soldier to another, i do understand and i appreciate this hub very much. I wrote a poem about 9/11 called america the beautiful it is in my hubs. Blessings to you.
I am incredibly proud and blessed to be born here and live in America. I pray for our country to learn that we can disagree in love and remain united while facing trials and stresses.
HattieMattieMae, I am 100% on your side. I am a veteran of the Vietnam War and I am more proud of my military service for country than anything else I have done in life. Also, I do believe that the strong spirit of Christianity that exists in the U.S. is what underpins our success as a nation. Your hub is quite uplifting and it is good to know that there are people like you out there.
Hi HMM - I've been waiting a long time for someone to figure out all of that stuff about how to be a patriot. Everyone seems to have their own idea about it. Me, too. You, too. It is likely to be all of those many things, but maybe most it is following the golden Rule with your neighbors and you whole country.
Gus :-)))
Hey, Hattie! Why are you censoring a piece of American History to try to maintain your views? Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoly of 1797 is not going away; it clearly says the government of the U.S. was NOT founded as a Christian nation:

Please modify your views somewhat, in accordance with reality.
When I was on burial detail for 6 months,In the USMC.A lot of times it crossed my mind while the services were in session. That it didn't matter what religious group this person was part of.But the fact that they had fought for the right of us all to do so,As we each chose.Made me want to get my job, done to perfection for this veteran.
In my thinking, it occurs to me that people have forgotten that being an American has nothing to do with birth or nationality. American - was a freedom movement to have something better in life, at a time when all the nations of the world only allowed freedom or elements of freedom to the upper social class. The commoner could never hope for anything more than being poor. People migrated to America in droves because they could reap the rewards of their own efforts. Becoming an American was open to anyone who took the oath and pledged allegiance to the values of freedom. Today, I think people have largely forgotten this. Yes, many of us are now born as Americans on American soil, but being an American is not about birth place, its about whats in your heart and mind. Many born here today might well have been born in a communist or socialist country. They lack understanding and are a danger to the American way of life. I truly appreciate this hub. HattieMattie has been one of my favorite hubbers for a long time. Good work dear. - Harlan
P.S. I love that song by Lee Greenwood, God Bless the USA. I also know that Mr Greenwood will not perform the song for anything less than $25,000 and a string of other benefits during his appearance. We contacted him last summer to sing at a USA rally in Iowa and these were his conditions to appear. I don't know what Mr. Greenwood's situation is or how he feels about America, it may well be it costs him that much to travel with his band and equipment, I don't know, but it was cost prohibitive for us to hire him.
I am a Son of the American Revolution, and I, too, have many forefathers who have fought for this country over the years.
Having said that, I think we need to be careful not to get lulled in to a deep sleep thus thinking our government is a moral entity. Our government today is far different than it was just 60 years ago and I'm not so sure you should pledge your allegiance so quickly.
My allegiance is to Christ...not a national entity or geo-political boundary. I do not make pledges to or salute that which is secular.
I honestly don't think Christ would approve of how America has been doing its business the past 60 years and I don't think Christians should either.
Best wishes - L.R.
Of course, you are right, Hattie, and thank you for the clarification.
As a Christian, I need to remind myself that I am just a stranger passing through this life, because Heaven is my real home. I try to do as much good as I can at home and abroad and I am thankful to have been born in the U.S.A.
However, I think it might be wise not to get so involved in political affairs such that one offers blind allegience through misguided patriotism to a government as corrupt as ours.
Best wishes - L.R.

"Under the pledge of allegiance we are one nation under God. On the back of your dollar bill it says, "In God We trust". Anyone that has studied the history of America understands that God was part of the foundation of this country."
These quotes actually weren't added to the pledge or the dollar bill until the 1950's. Just food for thought. :)
Outside of the religious perspective, great hub. Americans are free to believe whatever they want to believe. Not being a Christian doesn't make you any more or less patriotic than someone who is a Christian.
